First CDM bio-fertiliser released in market

The first bio-fertiliser produced in the country under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) was formally released in the market Saturday, reports BSS.
The bio-fertiliser, named Waste Concern Jaiba Sar (WCJS) is being produced by Waste Concern and World Wide Recycling (WWR) of the Netherlands in the world's first organic waste composting project at Bhulta in Narayanganj using the Carbon Trading from November last.
The price of bio-fertiliser fixed at Tk 5.0 per kilogram, is being produced from vegetable waste with financial support of the Netherlands Foreign Ministry and the Netherlands Development Finance Company (NDFC).
To mark the release of the bio-fertiliser in the market, a function was jointly organised by the Netherlands Embassy and NDFC at the Daily Star office in the city Saturday.
Ambassador of the Netherlands in Bangladesh Bea Ten Tusscher launched the fertiliser while Chief Executive Officer of Dutch Bank for International Finance Nanno Kleiterp gave the welcome speech. Executive Editor of the Daily Star Syed Fahim Munaim moderated the function.
Waste Concern Director Iftekhar Enayetullah and Executive Director AH Md Maqsood Sinha of Waste Concern and Jan Boone of WWR Netherlands made a presentation on the project.
The Dutch Ambassador, in her remarks said that this project has set a unique example of making waste into valuable resources. She hoped that the project would also improve environment in the market places.
The compost project will have two more plants around Dhaka city within the year 2010 and this project will recycle 700 tonnes of organic waste everyday, he added.
Later, Bea Ten Tusscher and Nanno Kleiterp handed over fertiliser bags to some dealers and farmers.
They also visited the organic vegetable market at Karwan Bazar to observe waste collection system of WWW Bio-Fertiliser being operated in partnership with Dhaka City Corporation.
